Survival and Emergency Preparedness Tip:
You can use the "Shadow Tip Method" to determine direction:

Everywhere on Earth, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. This method will work wherever you are.

First, find a straight stick about 3 feet (1 meter) in length.

Find a level, clear spot on the ground, so that a good, defined shadow can be cast.

Push the stick into the ground so that it stands upright. It does not need to be perfectly vertical to the ground.

Mark the tip of the shadow on the ground cast by the stick with a rock, or by marking the ground.

Wait until the shadow moves 1.5 to 2 inches (this will take about 10-15 minutes).

Mark the tip of the second shadow on the ground cast by the stick with a rock, or by marking the ground.

Draw a line from the first mark through and about a foot beyond the second mark.

Stand with your left foot on the first mark, and your right foot on the end of the line you drew.

If you are in the northern temperate zone, you will be facing north.

If you are in the southern temperate zone, you will be facing south.
